How long does SEO take? An honest timeline for a small business

Technical fixes show up in Google Search Console within a few weeks. Content and rankings usually take three to six months to produce a steady change in enquiries, and keep compounding after that. Anyone promising page one in thirty days is describing something other than SEO. Here is what a realistic first year looks like, month by month, so you can tell progress from stalling.

Weeks one to four: the foundation

The first thing a competent SEO does is an audit, and the first work is technical: making the site fast, making sure every page is indexable, fixing broken links and redirects, adding structured data so Google understands what each page is, and setting up Search Console and analytics so that everything after this can be measured. You will not see rankings move yet. You will see Search Console’s coverage and Core Web Vitals reports start to change, and that is the evidence to ask for.

Months two to three: content goes in

Research into what your buyers actually type, then pages that answer it. Existing service pages get rewritten around real searches. New articles go up, answering the questions people ask before they know you exist. Google starts indexing them within days, but ranking them takes longer — new pages typically drift for weeks before settling. What you should see by the end of month three is impressions rising in Search Console: your pages appearing in more searches, even if they are on page two or three.

Months four to six: rankings settle, enquiries begin

This is when pages that were on page two start to reach page one for the less competitive searches, and clicks follow impressions. Enquiries from search begin to show up in your form and your assistant. It is also when the reporting has to change from “impressions and rankings” to “enquiries and revenue”, because that is what you are paying for. If by month six there is no movement in enquiries at all, something is wrong — the targets, the content or the site — and it should be said plainly.

Months seven to twelve: compounding

Articles published in month two are now mature and ranking for searches nobody targeted. The site has more pages Google trusts, so new pages rank faster. Links arrive because content worth citing exists. This is the stage most businesses never reach because they cancelled at month four, which is the single most expensive decision in SEO: all the cost was paid and the return was about to start.

What should make you walk away

A guarantee of a specific position on Google — nobody controls Google’s results. A promise of results in thirty days. Reporting that only ever shows impressions and rankings and never enquiries. Content you would be embarrassed to have your name on. Links you cannot see, from sites you would not want to be associated with. Any of these means the money is buying activity rather than outcomes.

What we do

Our Growth SEO plan is $800 a month, starting with a $450 audit that is credited to your first month if you go ahead within thirty days. Technical fixes, two articles a month written to answer what buyers actually search and ask AI assistants, on-page work on your service pages, and a monthly report on rankings, enquiries and revenue with a short call. Cancel with thirty days’ notice. If you are a single-location local business, you probably want local SEO instead, and we will say so.
